chances are Phil is right. safety and emissions regs made minis illegal to import starting in about 1969. those rules expire when a car turns 25, so gray market opportunists will put a 25-yr old vin on a 15-yr old car, and voila, legal car. Oregon is a pretty lax enforcer of these rules, but try to get one of these titled in California, and they know exactly whats goin on, and theyll send it to the crusher. assume that any mini newer than 1969 is a gray market phony.

that said, I haven't the foggiest how you tell the generations apart, and I'm sure google image search is just as confused.

Hi all, greetings form Wales U.K. I'm enjoying seeing all these '80s/'90's Minis on other side of pond masquerading as older models. Two big clues to age are wheel size and the side repeater indicators in front wings. Older minis had 10"wheels. Older still had sliding windows and external door hinges.
